Tri-Country Tour: Củ Chi & Mekong Delta (Đồng bằng Sông Cửu Long)

By Seyra Rico - 12:20 PM

I joined a group tour for these day trips because they were about 2-3 hours away from Hồ Chí Minh. Mekong River wasn't clean, and it felt like it was made solely for tourists. We were serenaded by a local Vietnamese group and the sound was amazing as we were having lunch. We also went to a candy making place, and the manual labor reminded me of the Philippines. It just struck me how traveling is a bourgeois activity. I remembered the housekeeper in my hostel telling me how she wants to go to my country, and knowing it will take her years to save enough money to do so.

But Củ Chi was interesting. That's how the communists defeated the American soldiers, by creating a network of tunnels underground. It was a community with schools, hospitals, and kitchens, people can also get married there. We watched a short video about their tactics, and we also entered one tunnel. It was hard to breathe inside the tunnel because you have this tourist group with you. We also saw their weapons and traps, which were pure genius. It was also heartbreaking to learn that fellow Vietnamese betrayed the revolution by pointing out the critical points of the tunnels to the Americans. I just wished I also went to the other tunnel, Vịnh Mốc, which is more preserved.

What about you? What are your thoughts on learning about wars? Let me know in the comment section!

The tunnels were too small for the American soldiers.
